Have you developed any unhealthy habits during the COVID period? Perhaps you drink one or two extra glasses of wine, or you are now used to watching hours of Netflix, or you have a need to overconsume chocolate at night?
We can overcome our unhealthy habits. Here are some suggestions I commonly give:
*Notice when you engage in this unhealthy habit, when and where do you engage in these behaviours? And then have a PLAN OF ACTION to engage in another behaviour at that time.
What other (healthier) behaviours could you do for 30- 60 mins that will distract you enough, to not engage in that unhealthy habit? For example, doing a fun activity, (pleasant) tasks/chores, paying attention to someone else, gentle exercise or thinking about something else - a story, a fantasy etc..(and writing it down). Try this for at least 2 weeks.
*Use mindfulness to 'ride the urge' of giving in to the unhealthy habit- when you feel the urge to engage in the unhealthy behaviour, do some Mindfulness practices- listen to an APP (notice your breathing, or notice the sounds around you, or do some Mindful walking or Mindful colouring in). You will notice the urge will come and go, and eventually it will not be as strong.
*Use your family and friends to help you- what could your family or friends do that would help you during this time as you are changing your habits? And ask for their support. Most people would be happy to help out- and you may be helping them at the same time (e.g. going for a walk together!).
