I commonly hear people say, there is no use taking a holiday if I have to isolate and I cannot go anywhere because of the COVID threat, I may as well go back to work. However, not taking a break, not having a holiday can contribute to mental overload and potential burn out. It is imperative to take breaks from work life and although the outbreak of COVID has lead to changed holiday plans, it is important to have that Holiday.
So, think creatively, if you cannot go where you originally planned for holidays, where else can you go? Can you consider short breaks, or have a holiday at home- what do you normally do on holidays, can you do that at home? Can you make your time at home, more like a Holiday?
Don’t ignore your mental health. Being COVID Positive may bring out an array of emotional responses. If you are feeling any emotions (from sadness, to anger to anxiety), let yourself feel these emotions- they will come and go. Feeling our emotions is healthier than blocking emotions. If you want to learn more about this and the Mind-Body connection, I recommend reading a book by Gabor Mate ‘When the body says no (the hidden cost of stress)’ (2019)
